Lyme-extinguishing Milk

In his first-person account in BMJ Case Reports, Chad Haney of Ohio State University describes a nutritional program he used to resolve his own Lyme disease pathology.

In the winter of 2011, Haney reports he took five grams of bovine colostrum (BC) 2x daily together with garlic, aloe vera, chlorella, yogurt and multivitamin. He experienced a symptom flare up called the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction when starting. This was actually a positive sign, since this reaction occurs when a heavy bacterial and viral pathogen die off and must be carried out via the blood and other detoxification pathways.

“The symptoms included bloating, diarrhea, headache, low-grade fever, increased fatigue, waves of depression, vertigo and increased muscle fasciculations. The symptom flare lasted for ∼7–10 days, then dissipated, leading to much improved health. The gastrointestinal symptoms disappeared and stools normalized in consistency and frequency. I also had a substantial reduction in depression, fatigue, pain and muscle fasciculations.”

David Martini of Arkansas, whose symptoms were misdiagnosed, was a chronic Lyme disease sufferer, who had to go beyond antibiotics for recovery. Like Haney, Martini used a BC-based nutritional program that included an effervescent drink mix called LimuZ6. Colostrum seems to be among the common denominators in both programs, probably due to its contingent of immune factors and related medically documented uses in overcoming other bacterial and viral illnesses.

“We know from research studies in both animals and humans that there are many reasons why people might have persistent symptoms,” says Dr. Brian Fallon, director of Columbia University’s Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases Research Center. “One reason is that a small amount of persistent infection may be present and continuing to rev up the immune response. A second possibility is that the immune response stays activated long after the spirochete is gone. If the immune system is revved up, then circulating cytokines may be present. Cytokines, especially the inflammatory ones, can cause symptoms of fatigue and pain and cognitive clouding and also induce depression.”

Among BC’s immune factors:

--Immunoglobulins, also called antibodies, neutralize pathogens in the lymphatic and circulatory systems.

--Leukocytes are living white blood cells that fight infection and aid in clearing toxins left by invading organisms. BC contains several different kinds of leukocytes, including lymphocytes, macrophages and phagocytes.

--Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein that aids the body in utilizing iron. The ability of lactoferrin to bind iron is important in keeping invading bacteria in check since they require iron to multiply.

--Transferrin is yet another mineral-binding carrier protein that attaches to available iron and can act independently or in concert with lactoferrin to impede the growth of certain aerobic bacteria, particularly in the gut.

--Proline-rich polypeptide (PRP) is a hormone that helps regulate the immune system, keeping it in balance between under- and over-activity.

The BC-based LimuZ6, developed by Anthony Kleinsmith, PhD, uses first-milking bovine colostrum; brown seaweed (kombu) with immune stimulating polysaccharides; fucoxanthin, a super concentrated seaweed extract; acetyl l-carnitine for the production of energy and neuroprotection; and zeolite, a mineral that aids in detoxification.

After using the BC-based formula, Martini told a reporter :“My pain level decreased significantly, my thinking grew clearer and I was able to get back to chores and not sleeping all day.” After two to three weeks, “I was able to stay awake all day without naps or falling asleep and my focus increased so greatly, I was even able to hold conversations and help my wife with the business.” He adds, “I now saturate my body with colostrum powder: one heaped tablespoon in the morning and one heaped tablespoon in the evening and one colostrum-based anti-aging drink morning and night. A lot of people we speak with do not realize how severe this disease is, they also don’t realize how hard it is to find a treatment.”

Tammy Murphy, whose symptoms become chronic, used the same colostrum-based nutrition program as Martini and says two weeks later she “noticed more energy, better sleep and less pain. “Within six weeks most of my symptoms were gone except the lung issues. It has taken a little over 8 months but this year I have not had to use my inhaler at all and haven’t had bronchitis even once. My energy is better. I have more stamina and I don’t suffer as much pain as I used to.”

It is important to find a first-milking colostrum taken from the first six hours following birth of the calves. This is when colostrum is most potent.
