1. Seals gastrointestinal lining. Babies are born with incomplete gastrointestinal (GI) barriers, especially the gut lining. Colostrum is a source of epithelial growth factor and insulin-like growth factor-1, which stimulate the GI cells to grow and finish sealing the barriers. Without colostrum, this process might go much more slowly and never complete. This is why many lactation experts stress that colostrum is better to start life with than infant formula. With a closed barrier, risk for food allergies and infectious illnesses decrease.
