Antidepressants add 7 years to face

Facial Muscles Relaxation Results In Skin Sagging

Anxiety symptoms, while uncomfortable and unsettling, are signals communicating that a problem must be addressed; with medication this linkage can be short circuited, delaying necessary changes

Antidepressants

Antidepressants

Two studies show commonly prescribed antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs—Zoloft, Paxil, Valium and Xanax among them—cause internal damage that accelerates premature aging, increasing wrinkling and loosening skin.

Twins On Meds Age Faster

A study of twins’ use of antidepressants such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and Celexa was linked to appearing up to seven years older. Published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, doctors looked at identical twins because they are genetically programmed to age at exactly the same rate.

Bahaman Guyuron, MD, professor and chairman, department of plastic surgery, University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, and his colleagues obtained comprehensive questionnaires and digital images from 186 pairs of identical twins. The images were reviewed by an independent panel, which then recorded the perceived age difference between the siblings.

Study showed that twins who had been divorced appeared two years older than their siblings who were married, single or widowed. Antidepressant use was associated with appearing seven years older.

2 And 7 Years Older

Results showed that twins who had been divorced appeared nearly two years older than their siblings who were married, single or widowed. However, antidepressant use was associated with appearing seven years older.

Cause Of Sagging Skin

According to Dr Guyuron the continued relaxation of the facial muscles or inhibition of growth hormone (needed for skin repair) due to antidepressant use could account for sagging. Losing abnormal amounts of weight also has harmful effects on a person’s appearance.

Cheat Biological Clock

“This research is important for two reasons,” Dr Guyuron said. “A person’s heritage may initially dictate how they age–but if you introduce certain factors into your life, you will certainly age faster. Likewise, if you avoid those factors you can slow down the hands of time. We essentially discovered that, when it comes to your face, it is possible to cheat your biological clock.”

Dementia And Wrinkling

Some 112 million people receive prescriptions every year for benzodiazepines such as Valium, Xanax and Ativan for anxiety and insomnia. Usually doctors recommend their use for a few weeks, ostensibly just to get over a trying period—but many people end up using them for years. Their chronic use is linked with a vastly increased risk for dementia (memory loss)—and dementia is a cause of wrinkling. A 2012 study from the British Medical Journal found these drugs cause a 50% increase in dementia. The most recent study follows on the heels of earlier research including a 2002 report also linking their use with memory loss and a 2005 review of six studies that found half of those analyzed increased risk.

An early warning sign of dementia is accelerated wrinkling besides stooped posture, brittle bones and loss of muscle strength—all of which are strongly linked with beauty.

4X Increased Mortality In Hypnotic State

These drugs are also linked with a fourfold increased risk of mortality due to the hypnotic state they exert over users (causing accidents). Only 18 pills a year are needed to be used for this risk to become apparent. Certain cancers’ incidence increased as well.

Accelerated Wrinkling Is A Sign Of Dementia

For years scientists have warned that an early warning sign of dementia is accelerated wrinkling alongside stooped posture, brittle bones and loss of muscle strength—all of which are strongly linked with women’s beauty.

Meds Delay Necessary Changes

Behavioral scientists and psychologists confirm that learning adapting and coping skills can relieve anxiety by empowering patients to make changes in their lives that relieve them of anxiety. They point out that shortness of breath, palpitation or other symptoms, while uncomfortable and unsettling, are signals from the brain communicating to the self that something must be addressed; with medication this linkage can be short circuited, delaying necessary changes.
