“Our bodies are our gardens – our wills are our gardeners.” - William Shakespeare

From years of interviewing Hollywood celebrities, writing a beauty column and doing research derived from pure curiosity and desire for appeal, I decided to share what I have learned as facts, so far. The learning process, more discoveries and practical knowledge will keep evolving, together with the world, for striving for self-esteem and happiness is human nature. Here are some well-established lifestyle choices anyone can make that don’t require any sort of special talent. The only and most common talent here is will, and without will most of us wouldn’t get out of bed in the morning. Making these steps a daily routine is every woman’s well, why woman- human’s obligation to her/himself and those around.

1. Sleeping beauty isn’t just a fairy tale.

“The nicest thing for me is sleep, then at least I can dream.” - Marilyn Monroe

These are just a couple reasons sleep is critical for looking good the next day and for living a long life in a youthful body in the long run.

1. When the body is at rest, blood circulation increases due to the change in the body’s temperature, which delivers more blood flow to the skin.

2. The body produces more collagen in sleep.

3. We tend to feel hungrier when the body is weak from lack of sleep, causing more food cravings and consequent weight gain.

4. Studies confirm the body after 8 hours sleep burns 20% more calories due to boosted metabolism.

5. We tend to be more irritated and moody when tired, which shows in complexion and has an effect on coloring of the skin.

6. Brain in sleep widens space between passages allowing fluids to flow and renew, which results in sharper mind- and we all know how unattractive a dull slow thinker is.

Here are some tips to make sleep more beauty bearing:

1. Sleep on your back. Sleeping on the face will cause skin to fold for hours, making wrinkles set in earlier than they should. Hard to do at first but once you get used to it, it’s the only possible and comfortable way to sleep.

2. Never sleep without moisturizer, especially on face, neck, décolleté and hands. The body loses most water while it sleeps, so protecting its moistureis crucial.

3. Purchase a humidifier. There are many options and brands, online and in store, fancy and inexpensive.

4. In the winter, wear more clothing to bed rather than leaving the heater on for the night. Electric and gas heaters dry skin so harshly, skin can have a rough texture in the morning.

2. A diet is a habit, and habits are hard to break.

“I've been on a diet every day since I was 19, which basically means I've been hungry for a decade.” – Julia Roberts as Anna Scott, Notting Hill, 1999

Ok, not to be too drastic, but starving won’t do any good. In fact, the more often we eat or have healthy snacks, the more consistent the weight will be. When we starve, our body fuels up double the next time we eat. So feed yourself by the clock, and the body’s metabolism will work the same way.

The older we get, the slower our metabolism, so unfortunately with age we find that cutting back on calories may just help us maintain the old weight. Now back to organics. As with skin care, natural, unprocessed and chemical free foods are less likely to make us fat. All those chemicals listed on the packages slow down metabolism as none of them are meant to be in our stomach in the first place. The two biggest weight gainers we digest with every meal are salt and sugar. Watch for sodium; excess salt will cause water retention and add up to five pounds, not to mention the impact on health.

Watch out for corn syrup-the biggest predator of an American diet, in my view- a cattle growing product sneaking in our meals in every step on an American street- from Starbucks to innocent-looking sauces of all sorts, not mentioning the top hits-ketchup and soy sauce. Unprocessed foods are easier to digest. The fewer ingredients there are on the package, the better is it for your health and weight.

The three most weight-affecting foods are sugar, carbs and processed foods. Sugar and large amounts of salt are contained in most foods at the supermarket, so choose wisely and read the purposely small type on the labelas ifit’s a book on how to eat better.

Drinking plenty of water is a recommendation I’ve heard from every celebrity I’ve had the pleasure of working with, and it makes total sense. Water also helps flush toxins out and maintains a hydrated body and skin. Green tea is one of the best antioxidants. Try drinking several cups of green tea each day for a week to see what happens to skin. The results may be astonishing.

3. Proper skin cleansing as a compulsion.

“I never sing in the shower either.” - Barbra Streisand

It isn’t as simple as just washing the face, body and hair, it’s also about carefully choosing the products we put on the skin. Organic everything has been the common appetite but many question whether it’s just hype, another whim or sales tactic, but doing some research will have it vindicated.

When using regular cleanser, soap, shampoo or shower gel, the chemicals used to make up their texture and smell, absorb through the skin and enter the bloodstream, filling our bodies with toxins that we don’t feel and don’t see, but are not meant to be in our system by nature. Non-organic products can also make skin dry as the toxins strip the natural oil that our bodies produce to keep the moisture balance, accounting for one of the first grounds for premature skin aging.

Knowing your face cleanser is crucial, as using it before bed or even sooner, to wash off not the makeup but the dirt and oil that the body produces in excess which again, isn’t visible or felt, but it is there and there is a big layer of it. This dirt and oil will prevent skin from renewing itself, allowing moisturizers to clog pores which then turn into blackheads or zits that stretch out pores and make them more visible.

When washing the face in the shower, turn down the temperature of the water. Skin on the face is different and more sensitive than that on the rest of the body and hot or very warm water can be too harsh for it.

4. Exercise, dance, ski, play tennis, anything… Just move!

“Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.” - John F. Kennedy

Whichever type of sports, fitness, yoga or dance, if it produces sweat, it’s good for your skin, if it creates a smile, even better. Ever noticed a glowing face after an intense run or a sauna session? Sweating boosts blood circulation, helps the body flush out toxins.

Exercise also boosts the spirit and is a certain cure for depression, if you keep up the pace and exercise, i.e. sweat, consistently. Ever heard someone ask “You’re glowing… are you in love?” A good mood and deep settled happiness show on the face and in the body language. The happier we are, the more people we tend to attract, which in turn makes us even happier.

Remember the saying: “Money makes money.” Same with happiness. Having a stressful day? Go for a short run, jump on the treadmill or join a fitness class. Just 30 minutes of exercise will relieve stress, give a nice emotional boost, and unfold self-esteem and confidence in your appearance.

5. Moisturize like skin depends on it.

“I love to put on lotion. Sometimes I'll watch TV and go into a lotion trance for an hour. I try to find brands that don't taste bad in case anyone wants to taste me.” - Angelina Jolie

It actually does. And I wouldn’t recommend tasting different brands before buying them, as you probably just pictured Angelina doing. But let’s face it; Angelina Jolie can get away with a lot of things. One thing for sure that doesn’t have mercy on anyone is age. Aside from using mostly natural products, make sure it’s suitable for your skin type. If skin is oily, avoid oil-based moisturizers to prevent breakouts. For dry skin, the thicker the moisturizer, the better. Check packaging for extra helpful anti-aging ingredients, such as antioxidants or hyaluronic acid. I recommend creams with alpha hydroxy acid for delaying signs of aging and retinol for minimizing existing ones. Don’t listen to TV ads, most of the big brands contain an enormous number of chemicals and survive and thrive thanks to their big brand names.

Exfoliate! Exfoliate skin several times a week (read the directions for use, each product has its own strength). Scrubbing off a layer of dead skin will make moisturizer more effective.

6. Eat the alphabet.

"The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease." –Thomas Edison

Yes, our main source of nutrition is food, but lets be frank, it’s not possible to eat every type of food to nurture the body with all its essential vitamins every single day. Or if it is, then Number 4 is probably out of the question. Even with food, the number of nutrients we intake is not enough and not all that we intake absorbs to make the most of it. Multivitamins are the easiest way to go and should be the minimum requirement. Perhaps you have a misconception that vitamins are for children, or for the elderly. Not at all, our body changes throughout life, and lives with us throughout life so there’s no better time than to give it what it needs then every day.

Every single vitamin on the shelves of a vitamin store or local pharmacy benefits skin, even if advertised for something entirely different.

For instance: vitamin B – for energy and stress relief, vitamin C – immune system, vitamin A – eyes. Yet all these are powerful antioxidants and vital nutrition for skin. To tell you my mom’s secret, especially an oily E, in large doses. She looks 28 and has no problem mingling with my girlfriends, stealing guys’ attention and hearing me asked why she didn’t show up for my birthday party. She claims she has been on E since she was taking it for pimples.

7. Detox for instant transformation.

“People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed.” - Audrey Hepburn

If you have never tried cleansing, trust that you will feel fresh, light, energetic, renewed and in a better mood. Cleansing the body will also help rejuvenate and clear the mind, making ways for more positive vibes to run through it freely.

Cleansing shouldn’t mean fasting; there are multiple creative ways to cleanse the body without passing out or getting “hungry.” However, it isn’t easy and as the body starts to cleanse fast, natural cravings kick in and sticking to it may take some extra will. The longer the cleanse lasts, the easier it gets and the more successful it is. However, overdoing it may cause the opposite effect. Returning to a regular diet after a cleanse may cause extra weight gain if splurging is unavoidable.

Here are some recently popular types of cleanses, each one of which mean consuming only and only these things, cutting out everything else, including liquids like juice and soda, and most certainly coffee and alcohol.

1. Fruit detox

This one is one of the easy detox methods, as it involves eating, when most cleanses require some sort of starvation mode. I can’t say this cleanse will not help take off a lot of weight as fruit contains a lot of sugar, preventing you from lightheadedness and hunger. Ideal cleansing period: seven days.

2. Liquid detox

What’s good about this one is the variety of juices, smoothies and soups that can be consumed, and the stomach filling capabilities of heavy liquids. Search the internet for the many diet options to suit the taste buds for a three day cleanse.

3. Juice detox

Similar to the liquid diet, only limiting the liquid variety, it’s a blend of the first two. Use a juicer on fresh organic fruits and vegetables at home when possible. The freshest produce contains most nutrition. Duration for this vitamin invasion: three days.

4. Organic detox

Give body plenty of time to naturally get rid of the toxins by simply not consuming them and let the system do its thing. As this cleanse doesn’t limit solid food intake, it can be maintained for a longer period of time. Ideally: two weeks. If at all possible, make this detox an everyday lifestyle.

Tip: a sauna for every day during any cleanse will make it more effective. Help the body flush out the toxins it’s already trying to get rid of by sweating them out and increase blood circulation for a more glowing skin. Sauna is a pleasant, relaxing way to spend a few minutes after a busy day and wind down and maybe exchange a few words with a stranger or spend more time with a family member. To make the trip even more effective, try Pure Sweat, a body butter designed to help the body sweat even more. I’m a big fan of Pure Sweat, which is intended specifically for the sauna (www.sunlighten.com).
