Thinking of moving? Relocating from a higher class neighborhood to one that has lower socioeconomic standing is dangerous for weight, says a scientific study that took place in Dallas, Texas.

As it turns out, moving from a higher class neighborhood to a slightly less advantaged area does more than subject one to more violent crime. The study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, prescribes never moving socially downward if one wishes to stay beautiful.

The scientists discovered that women and men who moved to more socioeconomically deprived neighborhoods gained so much weight that they became obese. The study looked at how people fared when they moved either to nice safe neighborhoods, or neighborhoods that had violence, an ugly environment and no social cohesion.

Two hundred sixty three participants moved to a higher crime neighborhood, 586 to one with a lower crime rate and others just moved laterally. Those who moved to higher crime areas “gained more weight compared to those who remained” at the same level or up. The study cited “moving…to higher-deprivation neighborhoods… as a risk factor for weight gain…”
